Description:

This strenuous trail traverses steep forested hillsides to a grassy meadow on ocean’s edge.  The trail descends about 900 feet in elevation through a Sitka Spruce-Western Hemlock rain forest, crosses two seasonal creeks and ends at a prairie headland overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Chitwood Falls cascades off the backside cliff at Harts Cove. An unseen cove to the south resounds with the barking of sea lions.

Note: The gate at junction of Highway 101 and Road 1861 is closed January 1 to July 15. This will make your hike 4 miles longer.

Directions:

At the junction of Hwy 101/18, travel north 3.3 miles to Forest Service Road 1861, west of Highway 101. The trailhead is located at the end of the road, approximately 4 miles.
